Critter Odyssey

Privacy policy

Critter Odyssey is free, with no ads, no purchases and no tracking. This page lists exactly what the game sends to our server, what other trainers can see, and how long any of it is kept.

Who we are

Critter Odyssey is made by Kedos (Kedos Consulting Limited), which is responsible for the data described here. If you have a question about your data, email support@kedos.co.uk.

What stays on your device

Your Critters (binder and merge box), food, Orbs and settings are saved on your phone, tablet or browser. They aren't sent to our server, and deleting the app or clearing your browser's data removes them.

The exceptions are Critters you choose to share: one you place at an arena, offer in a trade, or send into a raid is sent to the server so other trainers can see it.

And when you move your Critters to another device with a transfer code, a copy of them waits on the server under that code until the other device uses it. Nobody else can see it.

What the server keeps

On iPhone and iPad the game connects you to the shared world automatically. On the website you can choose Play solo instead, and then nothing on this list is sent at all, unless you make a transfer code to move your Critters to the app.

WhatWhyKept for
Trainer name, team colour, trainer level, and when you joined and last played Shown to other trainers Until you delete your account
How you sign in: your Game Center player ID, a random ID made on your device, or your Sign in with Apple ID for this app Recognising you when you come back Until you delete your account
Your approximate position: the middle of a square about 150 m across that contains you. Your exact position is never stored, and it is never sent to another trainer Working out who is close enough to trade with — they are told only a rounded distance, never a position — and checking that your catches were made near where you are One position, replaced as you move. Deleted after 7 days without playing
Catches: which Critter, and the map square (about 110 m across) it was in So a Critter you catch disappears for trainers nearby 48 hours
Activity feed: who caught what, and the map square it happened in. No position for the trainer Live updates on nearby maps 48 hours
An arena you hold: the Critter you placed there and your trainer name Other trainers battle it Until someone takes the arena or you delete your account
Raid strikes: the Critter you sent, how many times you tapped in your one-minute strike (and in each second of it), and when it landed Sharing the raid with everyone fighting it Until a day after the raid ends
Trades: the Critters offered and how the trade ended Trading Until you delete your account
Starter pack: that your account was given its welcome gift (100 Orbs and a 20-minute boost), and a code your device made to claim it. The Orbs themselves stay on your device So a new trainer gets the gift once, not again after every reinstall Until you delete your account
Journeys: your journey tickets (each one you're given, earn by walking, or use, with a note saying why if we sent it), and the journeys you start, the stop you've reached and the ones you finish. Not your position So your tickets and your journeys, and the stamps you've collected, follow your account Until you delete your account. A journey you abandon is deleted 30 days after you leave it
Invite cards: the seven-character code printed on your cards, and — if you used someone else's card, or someone used yours — that the two accounts are linked and whether the journey ticket has been given. Not your position, and not a friends list So your code stays the same on cards you've already printed, and so a card is used once and pays once Until either account is deleted
Distance walked: how many metres you walked each day with the game open. It's worked out as your position changes, and the positions themselves aren't kept Earning journey tickets (one for every 5 km, up to 3 a week), and the walking achievements and leaderboard 13 months, or until you delete your account
A transfer code, and a copy of your Critters, food, Orbs, trainer level and arena record, when you make a code to move them to another device. Not your trainer name Moving your Critters from the website to the iPhone app Until the other device uses the code. An unused code is deleted 30 minutes after you make it
Play statistics: the days you played, when and how often, how you signed in, your type of device and app version, and first-time milestones such as your first catch Seeing how many people play, and where new players get stuck 13 months, or until you delete your account
Trainers you block, and reports you make Keeping the world friendly Until you delete your account. A report you made is kept after that, without your name

If you link Sign in with Apple, we ask Apple only for an ID. We don't request your name or email address.

Our server doesn't log players' IP addresses. It uses your connection's address for a moment when you sign in, or make a transfer code without signing in, to slow down anyone trying over and over, and then forgets it. The only address it records is one that tries to use our admin tools with the wrong key.

What other trainers see

While you're connected with the game open, trainers within 2 km see your trainer name, team and level on their map. They never see your exact position: your trainer is placed in the middle of a square about 150 m across that contains you, on a grid that's different for every player and moves every day. Your catches and arena wins nearby show up on their maps too, placed the same way. Your trainer drops off their maps a few minutes after you close the game.

The server only shows you to trainers who are actually near you. It checks where they really are, not just the place they ask about, so nobody can look you up from somewhere else.

Blocking works both ways. Once either of you blocks the other, neither of you appears on the other's map, and you can't trade.

Journeys are played on your own. While you're on one, other trainers still see you where you really are, never at the place you're visiting, and nobody there can see you or your catches.

What we look at

To see how the game is doing, we look at totals on our own server: how many people play each day, how many come back, and how far new players get. No analytics company is involved, and the figures aren't shared with anyone.

Some of these totals also reach us as messages in our own Slack workspace: a note when someone new starts playing or someone comes back for the day, and a summary each morning. The messages only ever hold numbers, like how many people played and whether it was on the app or the website. They never include a trainer name, an account or a location.

When we look at roughly where people play, the map is never more detailed than about 1 km, and any area with fewer than three players is left out. We can look at a single account, for example to review a report, send journey tickets, or check that walking hasn't been faked, but its location is never shown more precisely than about 11 km.

Location

On iPhone and iPad the game asks to use your location while you're using the app. It never asks for background location, and it stops using your location when you close the game, so only walking with the game open counts towards journey tickets. If you say no, the map can't place you and the game can't be played. You can change this any time in Settings.

If you choose Play solo on the website, your location stays in your browser.

Other services that see your connection

Children

Critter Odyssey is made to be safe for children. We don't ask for a real name, email address, age or contact details, and there's no chat or messaging. The only thing a player can write is their trainer name, which is checked for offensive words and can be reported. A parent can delete a child's account from inside the game or by emailing us.

Deleting your data

In the game, tap your trainer picture at the top left of the map, then Delete my account and all my data. That immediately deletes your trainer, sign-in links, position, catches, arenas, trades, raid progress, blocks, journey tickets and journeys, distance walked, your starter pack record, your invite code and any invite links, a transfer code waiting to be used, and play statistics from the server, and wipes the Critters saved on the device. Feed entries you made are separated from your account at once and are gone within 48 hours.

You can also email support@kedos.co.uk with your trainer name and we'll delete it for you.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of the data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email support@kedos.co.uk. If you're in the UK and unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
